10 Years After the National Academies Report
"Improving Diagnosis in Health Care" was published in 2015 by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and represents the most important foundational publication in our field. What progress has been made since then? What problems remain, and what are the next steps to advance diagnostic safety and quality?
This special edition of our DIAGNOSIS journal explores these issues and reviews the current state of the field across the spectrum of diagnosis. The key contributions enabled by philanthropy and through AHRQ sponsorship are highlighted, citing progress in the US and internationally. The central role of SIDM is recounted, and its transition to become CIDM, the Community Improving Diagnosis in Medicine. Individual chapters review progress in medicine, radiology, the clinical laboratory, research, education, the use of AI.
Thanks to grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Josiah Macy Foundation, all of the papers in this special edition are open access and free to read and download.
